Why Do I Need a Sinus Lift?

Middle-aged man thinking

When teeth go missing, the jawbone that used to support it starts to atrophy. This occurs because the body, sensing that there is no tooth, diverts nutrients from the bone to other areas that need them more.

This can result in the jawbone thinning. If this occurs toward the back of the upper jaw, placing dental implants can actually end up piercing the sensitive sinus membrane that sits just above it. As you can imagine—we want to avoid this as much as possible!

That’s where a sinus lift comes in. It’s a bone graft that allows our team to increase the thickness and strength of the jaw, which makes it sturdy enough to support dental implants and prevent the new roots from affecting the sinuses.

The procedure gets its name from the fact that the sinus membrane is literally lifted a few millimeters to create enough room for the bone grafting material.

After your mouth has been thoroughly numbed, a small window will be made in the jawbone. This enables your dentist to place bone grafting material right where it’s needed to protect both your future teeth and sinuses.

The area is then closed and sutured. Typically, the procedure can be completed in a single appointment, and most patients describe feeling a little pressure, but nothing resembling pain while in the chair.

Sinus Lift Recovery

Over the next few weeks and months, the bone graft will encourage the growth of new, healthy jawbone. To help with this, you should not drink with a straw, smoke, or use any kind of tobacco during the first days of recovery. You should also avoid any strenuous physical activity at first, as it can interfere with the healing process.

You’ll still be able to clean your teeth and eat what you like after the initial recovery period, and once your dentist thinks your mouth is ready, you’ll return to our office to have your dental implants placed.
