The consequences of tooth loss extend far beyond having to deal with a gap in your smile. Missing teeth can affect how you speak, make it more difficult to chew, and put more strain on your remaining teeth, forcing them out of alignment and making them more vulnerable to injury and infection. For these reasons, dentists typically recommend considering replacement options immediately after tooth loss. Here’s a brief guide to dental bridges and partial dentures to give you a better idea if one of them can be a suitable treatment for you.
What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is an appliance designed to replace one or several sequential missing teeth. They have been used in some form for centuries, and modern models are incredibly lifelike and comfortable because they are customized to fit the needs of the individual patient. They are also irremovable, making them great for people who worry about losing things. They come in two varieties:
Traditional dental bridges
A traditional dental bridge is one or several artificial teeth in a row secured between two dental crowns. To be placed, the teeth on either side of a gap must be altered so the crowns can be cemented on top of them. Once placed, the bridge functions like real teeth and helps prevent the rest of the arch from drifting out of alignment.
Implant bridges
An implant bridge is a row of several artificial teeth secured in place above the gumline with dental implants. Since these implants are surgically placed directly into the jawbone, implant bridges do not require the alternation of healthy teeth. Dental implants also hold the bridge more securely than dental crowns, allowing an implant bridge to maximize the patient’s chewing power.
What Are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are removable appliances designed to replace one or several missing teeth throughout an arch. The bases of these devices are made out of gum-colored acrylic material, and the artificial teeth are made from beautiful porcelain or ceramic, creating a comfortable and lifelike restoration.
Partial dentures can fill the places of teeth missing anywhere in the arch regardless of whether they are next to one another and are held in place by metal wires that clip onto the remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures must be cleaned and soaked regularly to prevent the buildup of bacteria, which can result in infections and unpleasant odors.
Dental bridges are typically better for patients who are missing several sequential teeth. On the other hand, partial dentures are best when used to replace one or several missing teeth throughout an arch. Consulting with your dentist is the only definitive way to know if either of these treatments can address your needs.
