I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and then I went to Indiana University for dental school up in Indianapolis for four years, and I loved it there. I married my husband, he was in the Navy, and we moved all around. Then we decided to start our family here in middle Tennessee.
I've done a lot of continuing education in the couple of years I've been out of school. One of the classes I've taken was Six Month Smiles. I really wanted to get involved in more of the orthodontic and cosmetic cases in our office, so I traveled to that class. We've got a couple of assistants that has gone as well. It's enabled me to do a lot more ortho cases to kind of set up some of our big cosmetic changes and be able to see more patients here versus sending them to another office.
My mom was a hygienist for 32 years. I grew up in a house where we went to the dental office on Saturdays with her, so I was around dentistry. In the second grade, I did a project. I told my mom, “I'm going to be a dentist,” and she said we never spoke about it again. That was just the plan. So, here I am now. I love it. It is the best profession that I could imagine.
Dr. Oates volunteers her time in the community to help those who are less fortunate. The most rewarding part of dentistry for me is just getting to know that everyday I make a difference and not just in our patients' lives, but also with the staff. We have a great team here. We've got a lot of people that work together and it's a big family, essentially, so I love getting to know that at the end of the day, I've helped people grow, I've helped people with their dental health, I've helped people get out of pain. There's just a lot of fulfilling rewards in dentistry.
Dr. Oates is married to a Navy veteran, and they have two beautiful girls, Olivia and Annie. In her spare time, Dr. Oates loves to bake, spend time at the family beach house in Oak Island, NC, and hike with her family. They are avid college football fans.
